Adoption Status: Available to Adopt
Foster Status: In Foster Care
DOB: October 2019 (just over a year old)
Breed: Lurcher (Collie x Whippet - parents known) approx 15kgs
Fencing Requirements: Minimum 1.6m of secure, dog-proof fencing around the home.
Hobbies: Snuggles, playing with his hoomans, chilling with his hoomans, learning new things, going on adventures, naps on his fav chair, chasing the wet stuff that comes out the hose, is learning to play fetch
Good Habits: Happy, loving, affectionate, GREAT with hoomans, house and crate trained, good manners, good with the cat in his home, playful
Bad Habits: Suffers from "Lockdown Syndrome" (was not socialised well as a pup because of lockdown, now struggles when meeting new dogs - needs proper introductions), pulls on lead
Personality Type: Sensitive and loving, happy and eager to please. High energy but likes to nap
Special Requirements: Ghost does have food allergies and will get ear infections if not fed the correct food - this has been well diagnosed though and as long as he stays on certain food he is fine. He will need a savvy owner however who will pay attention to him to make sure he never has to go through the pain of another ear infection.
Ideal Home: Ghost would LOVE a home where he got to hang out with his hooman all day but this is not an absolute must. He is an active boy and very smart so will need a home willing to do fun things like training games to work that brain and maybe even hikes or being a running buddy to burn some energy. Although Ghost is good with young children he would do much better in a home with either a single person or couple or a home with older, calm children (over 12) as he does get a bit anxious with too much going on. He is currently in a home with a cat who he was raised with so a dog savvy cat in the home may be ok.
Adoption Fee: $320
My oh my is this guy a heart stealer! Ghost is a handsome guy who has such a kind soul. He loves nothing more than to snuggle up on the couch at the end of the day with his hooman and hang out. He's the perfect size too! With the slim sleek lines of a Whippet, this boy fits perfectly in any car, couch or lap.
Being a typical Lurcher, he is full of energy and always loves to play but he loves to chill out too and feels very comfortable when he has a nice calm environment to just relax in. We do know that Ghosts parents are both working dogs so he is a high energy boy with brains who will thrive in a home where he can get both his physical and mental needs met. He would LOVE an environment where he would get to learn new things (think Absolute Dogs training games type stuff) but where he could also get out as a running or hiking buddy too and then head home to relax and just cruise. Positive force free training will be an absolute must for this guy.
Ghost is a bit of a sooky boy (but in a really sweet way) and loves to be with his people. He was adopted by his current hoomans during lockdown as a puppy from a breeder, however of course this meant that he was not able to be socialised while he was little and didn't get to experience all the things a new puppy should at that crucial time in his life, leaving him unsure in the "outside world" and fearful when first meeting new dogs. He was placed for adoption by the breeder to a pet home and he was already anxious as a wee pup so was deemed not suitable as a working dog. Along with being adopted into a loud home, with young children, that is always on the go, it soon became apparent to his family that they were not the right home for Ghost as his anxiety grew. Despite how much they love him and in wanting to do the best for him, they have asked us to find him a home that better fits his needs and personality so he can live his best life. They have, until this point been working with a positive trainer to help Ghost overcome some of his fears and he is doing very well but will need continued support from his new hoomans with socialisation - he will never be a dog that could go to dog parks or agility competitions, it's just too stressful for him. He could however do well in "calm" sports like Rally-o or scent training given the right training and with a patient hooman showing him that the world is safe.
Ghost does suffer from a food allergy, after extensive testing the specialists have narrowed down that he is allergic to a protein, however they are not sure exactly which one. We do know exactly what foods he can tolerate however and lamb is fine. This issue causes Ghost to get severe ear infections (which didn't help his anxiety as a babe) so he will need to stay on a strict diet - which we are able to give full information on as well as any vet records for his new hooman. All the hard work with his allergy and diagnosis is done, any new hooman would just need to ensure that his diet is kept and that they pay close attention to his ears to ensure he never has to endure that pain again.
Ghost is a smart boy and is already house and crate trained, knows sit, down, wait, spin, sit pretty, high five and would happily learn anything else you'd like to teach him! He has a lovely gentle nature and takes treats very gently too (no snatching food with this boy). New things are scary for him though so he will need a patient owner who will take the time to build his confidence and show him that the world isn't as scary as he thinks it is - any person who has owned a Lurcher knows they can be a little on the anxious side, but with a calm and gentle home where their needs (both physical and mental) are met they make the most loving, loyal family members - with these kids, the more you put into them the more you get back. Ghost will need to be the only dog in the home, but a dog savvy cat or two may be ok.
Can you offer Ghost a safe home full of adventures, company, quality food, a warm bed, regular flea and worm treatments, and most importantly loads of love for the rest of his days? Will you be the one to help make "The Scaries" go away?
As with all Pound Hounds, Ghost must be allowed inside the home (this includes sleeping) so he can really be part of the family.
ADDITIONAL INFO: Ghost is a LURCHER - please research the breed before applying for him if you are not already familiar with them. Lurchers are a wonderful family dog but they are not for everyone so please make sure you know what you're looking at before applying.
